haake_lion.jpg「I admire you, the people from Japan,so much for having stayed so calm admidst the earthquake and facing thousands of losses and difficulties after the dramatic tsunami that hit your country.

Unfortunately I have not found an image that in any way correlates with this dramatic situation but to give also a kind of naive positiveness I am sending you this lion.

Illustrator and painter
BERLIN / Germany

Olaf Hajek is one of Germany’s most renowned illustrators and has, through countless works, developed his personal and frequently awarded style.
Hajek decomposes the borders between authenticity and thought, South American folklore, mythology, religion, history, and geography. More than anything else his work explores the opposition between imagination and reality in the context of western cultures.
Hajek focuses enthusiastically on wonder, heroic acts, hallucinations, and fairytale motifs. With artistic virtuosity and intellectual calculation he relocates and recombines various captions of reality, planting them within new and exciting mystical connotative frameworks. Disproportional figures are often depicted posed in front of theatrical fore- and backgrounds.
Hajek’s images are generally created by applying acrylic to cardboard, and resemble Cuban advertising posters from the 1960’s on account of the technique with which he creates artificial patina. They retain valuable graphic feel despite their painted appearance.

hidy_l-3-wellfleetrefuge.jpg「Japanese artists have been leaders, giving strength and inspiration to artists around the world for 150 years. My own styles have borrowed much from Japan. This small gift of art from me is nothing compared to the losses our Japanese brothers and sisters have had recently. But it comes with much love, and a belief in the healing power of nature, and the resilience of the human spirit.

Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, Time, Playboy, Rolling Stone, the New York Times

Brad Holland is a self taught artist and writer whose work has appeared in Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, Time, Playboy, Rolling Stone, the New York Times and many other national and international publications. His paintings have been exhibited in museums around the world, including one-man exhibitions at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Clermont-Ferrand, France; the Museum of American Illustration, New York City and the Torino Atrium, Turin, Italy. His satire of the art business, “Express Yourself, It’s Later Than You Think,” first published in The Atlantic Monthly, has been widely republished, both in print and on the Internet. In 2005 he was elected to the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame.

“During a career that has stretched over three decades,” wrote Steven Heller in Print Magazine, October 2002, “Brad Holland has changed the way illustration is perceived and practiced. By the late '60s he had helped transform a profession of renderers into one of conceivers, challenging editors and art directors to let him create images that complemented rather than mimicked texts.” In 2000, the editors of the artists' directory RSVP voted Holland “the one artist, who in our opinion, has had the single greatest impact on the illustration field during the last twenty five years.” Holland has won more awards presented by the New York Society of Illustrators than any other artist in its long history. The American illustrator Mark English has called him "the most important illustrator in America today."

In the last decade, Holland has become an outspoken advocate for artists’ rights and is a founder of three organizations that have worked for the last decade to maintain US copyright law: ICON, the first-ever conference for American illustrators, founded in 1999; the Illustrators' Partnership of America (IPA), 2000; and in 2007 its successor, the American Society of Illustrators Partnership (ASIP), a coalition of 12 artists organizations that led the successful opposition to the anti-copyright legislation known as the Orphan Work Act of 2008. In that capacity, Holland testified before the Intellectual Property Subcommittees of both the US Senate and House of Representatives.

Terms like zen, wabi-sabi, yohaku sounds familiar to me and seem to represent a part of japan's spirit.
Later I started practising kendo, becoming instructor, and trying to enter deeply in certain aptitudes.
Thus I firmly believe in the strong capacity of reaction of the whole Japanese society and in the eternal blow of his east wind. Mythical energy. 」

Burton Kramer is a lyrical colorist painter in the tradition of ‘Geometric Abstraction’. His works are infused with sounds and rhythms, with almost choreographic visual references to dancing feet, to jazz, to bebop, the ‘lindy hop’, baroque music, marching massed hurdy-gurdys, Mozart, multi-layered Senegalese and Haitian drumming.

Kramer was educated at Yale University, The Institute of Design of IIT,Chicago, The Royal College of Art, London (as a Fulbright Scholar) and The State University of New York.
A member of the faculty at Ontario College of Art & Design for 21 years, Kramer lectured, published, taught and exhibited internationally; he has traveled extensively... in Europe, the Far and Middle East.

In 2002 Kramer was awarded 'The Order of Ontario' by the Province for 'his contributions to the cultural life of the Province' and an Honorary Doctorate from Ontario College of Art & Design. He was the recipient of a 'Lifetime Achievement Award' from Arts Ontario in 1999.

Jean-Benoit Lévy

levy_j-1-home.jpg「 On and on, again and again I was looking at the small movie on my computer screen.
Taken up above from an airplane, there was a sort of dark line recovering slowly the surface of the earth. Slowly I took conscience that at the very same moment the wave on the picture was not only recovering the pixelated landscape of my screen. Down below at a very fast speed, the wave of mud was erasing all on her passage, bringing dead and devastation.
A few days later I saw another little movie where some soldiers from an other country were bringing boxes of food to the japanese rescues-workers. At one moment this worker did give a hug to the soldiers delivering the boxes, but very quickly took again his usual posture and quickly left to his destiny. This little sign of humanity, this instant of life at a deep moment of distress talked more to me than any explanation. I understood that after the disaster it took days and days to reorganize, and that many had to work night and days, forgetting their job,
their habits their family, their own life. Trying to save what was left to be saved.
While making this image, I am thinking simply to each of those, individual who have found themselves on the way of this wave. This could have been you or me. I dedicate this little image to each of them.
