Sayaka Abe

In the days after 3/11, my family and friends in Sendai had difficulty getting food. At that time I had some Japanese food here that my mother had sent me from Sendai. I could cook everyday in France with this food, but this was painful for me. It made me think of my grandmother. She lived during the Second World War and was always thankful when she was able to eat just one grain of rice, even when so many years later it was perfectly normal to eat rice any day, at any time. 」

aichele_m-2-hope.jpg「I have been to Japan several times and have met so many nice people in this very interesting country.
Its culture, the artwork, the people.
Only last year in September I could celebrate a thanksgiving ceremony and a wedding in a tiny village in Japan. I was very touched by the beauty of it.
May your hope never end and happiness come back to you.

Ian Berry was born in Lancashire, England. He made his reputation in South Africa, where he worked for the Daily Mail and later for Drum magazine. He was the only photographer to document the massacre at Sharpeville in 1960, and his photographs were used in the trial to prove the victims' innocence.

Henri Cartier-Bresson invited Berry to join Magnum in 1962, when he was based in Paris. He moved to London in 1964 to become the first contract photographer for the Observer Magazine. Since then assignments have taken him around the world: he has documented Russia's invasion of Czechoslovakia; conflicts in Israel, Ireland, Vietnam and Congo; famine in Ethiopia; and apartheid in South Africa. The major body of work produced in South Africa is represented in two of his books: Black and Whites: L'Afrique du Sud (with a foreword by the then French president François Mitterrand), and Living Apart (1996).

Important editorial assignments have included work for National Geographic, Fortune, Stern, Geo, national Sunday magazines, Esquire, Paris-Match and Life. Berry has also reported on the political and social transformations in China and the former USSR. Recent projects have involved tracing the route of the Silk Road through Turkey, Iran and southern Central Asia to northern China for Conde Nast Traveler, photographing Berlin for a Stern supplement, the Three Gorges Dam project in China for the Telegraph Magazine, Greenland for a book on climate control and child slavery in Africa.

Erik Brandt

brandt_e-1-poster.jpg「Hajimemashte, watashiwa, Erik Brandt desu. Dozo yoroshiku onegaishimasu.

As a young man living in Fukuoka, Japan in the early 90's, I loved the stories and traditions of the Japanese people, especially the tale of the rabbit making mochi. I knew the American Indians also saw this same rabbit. Much of my work has always involved the spirit of this story, and, perhaps oddly, rabbits. The earthquake was such a profoundly tragic event, and caused great sorrow to the world, without forgetting the unimaginable distress of the Japanese people directly affected. I wanted to send a message that we were all together, all of the people and all of the colors of the world, for one. All together for Japan.

Even if I am just one small rabbit, my heart aches for your loss, but the rabbit will keep making mochi, and the people of Japan will be stronger for this.

I am one rabbit for Japan, and I am yours.

I’ve worked as a designer, illustrator, and art director at universities, ad agencies, publishers, and large corporations. Since graduating with a BFA in visual communication/illustration and later with an MFA in painting I have always free-lanced and exhibited in galleries. I am currently a professor teaching illustration and drawing at Boise State University. Before that I taught in and chaired the art department at Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I’ve greased enough palms to have been included in annuals like the Society of Illustrators NY, Spectrum, 3x3, American Illustration and have even finagled some medals. I have a decent client list and was proud to do a children’s book with Random House in 2002. I am currently working feverishly on an exhibition at the Animazing Gallery in NYC this Fall along with the occasional illustration assignment that lands a little off center.

I’m often asked when I started drawing; to which I generally respond, “When did you stop?” I believe that line was borrowed from someone more clever than myself. But it is true.

profile looks at the right. One helps the other. They are connected.
The whole beauty of being together. One affects the other. The
composition recalls meeting the sea to the mainland. As if the sea is
sometimes more, sometimes less. It's like the conversation of two
elements. They look at different side, but are together. The main
message of this work - let's be together.

gaona_o-1-sunrises.jpg「 No matter race, ideology, thinking, politics, social class ... we are all one and within us is true peace and humanity means that we help each other. Countries must come together no matter what just for the sole purpose of helping and care for each other. For the brothers of Tohoku: inside all of us are the true peace that we need to succeed.
Japan has a huge heart, painted red, Japan is the world's heart, long after the storm, when you least expect it, the sun rises and gives life again. today is a good day to start ... and tomorrow too, encourage!

Anthony John Gray

gray_a-1-womanandchild.jpg「Myself and my family wish all the people of Japan healing and we give all our love to all those who suffered in recent events. The paintings shown deal with the bond between a mother and a child, the casting of light on dark shadows and the love of an eternal god force in THE FOUNTAINHEAD..

(Lazarides Gallery in Soho, London says of the artists work.)

Anthony John Gray went from working as a policeman in the early 70s to one of his first exhibitions-of stylised, Surrealist, soft porn images-being banned by Brighton’s local authority. In 2005 Anthony’s work, which he calls ‘Spiritual Logic’, remains provocative albeit in very different ways.
Set against a topical backdrop, with the Western world encumbered by a cycle of indulgence, guilt and cynicism, Anthony’s paintings are a reminder of how fantastic living in the future is.
In his work man is once more dwarfed and excited by possibility, ideological agendas possess beauty and validation, and glamour is an intelligent and worthwhile pursuit rather than simply a display of status. Sex, graphics, splendour and psychedelia combine in a ‘ raygun’ gothic space opera that unlike most modern art, looks beautiful on a wall. Right now, our generation needs Anthony John Gray.

illustrator, cartoonist
NY / USA

Robert Grossman was born in New York City in 1940. His father Joseph was a display artist who gave Robert his earliest training and sent him to Saturday morning art classes at the Museum of Modern Art. After attending public schools in Brooklyn he went to Yale where he was the editor of the Yale Record (“America’s Oldest College Humor Magazine”) and graduated with a B.A. in fine art in 1961.

After a brief stint as an assistant to New Yorker art director James Geraghty, Grossman launched himself as a freelance illustrator and cartoonist, his work featuring caricature and a satiric outlook. Early clients included Esquire and the New York Herald Tribune.

He has done cover illustrations for more than 500 issues of national magazines such as Time, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated, Rolling Stone and The New Republic. Today his work can be seen frequently in The Nation, The New York Times, The Boston Globe and The New York Observer. Examples of his recent work may be seen at robertgrossman.com and his web site o-manland.com features a comic strip history of the 2008 presidential election.

He was nominated for a 1978 Academy Award for a brief animated film entitled Jimmy The C, and during the 1980’s produced a number of animated television commercials. In 1979 he had a one-man show at the Vontobel Gallery in Zurich. His sculpture and paintings in oils have been widely exhibited in several group shows.

Grossman’s home and studio are in New York’s Soho district. He is twice divorced, with four children – Michael, a painter, Alex, an actor, Leila, a photographer, Annie, a writer -- and four grandchildren. Grossman’s longtime companion is Elaine Louie, assistant to the editor of the Style Department of the New York Times, and the author of over a dozen books on food and design.
